Forget The New iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Has Something Much Better

Next month, Tim Cook and his team will unveil the iPhone 16 Pro, marking Apple’s entry into generative AI. But what will it truly offer? With most features tied to software updates that won’t arrive for months, the iPhone 15 Pro might be the smarter choice.

The iPhone 16’s standout feature is its integration of generative AI through the Apple Intelligence suite. This AI capability requires high performance, which most current iPhones lack. However, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, with their A17 Pro Apple Silicon chipsets, are exceptions. The iPhone 15 models, using the A16 chip, seem designed to create a specs gap, justifying the higher Pro model costs. This means you can experience Apple’s AI software without upgrading to the iPhone 16.

It’s important to note Apple’s AI software status. Some features are in public beta, but Apple won’t launch its AI suite with the iPhone 16 in September. Instead, a limited feature set will arrive via an OS update in October, with ChatGPT integration by year’s end. Full AI implementation might not occur until late Q1 of next year, well into the iPhone 16 Pro’s lifecycle. This delay could affect buyers, as the full AI potential won’t be available for some time.

On August 26, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on Apple’s retail staff training for the iPhone 16 Pro launch. Two key points emerged. First, the training date shifted to Thursday or Friday, aligning with a September 9 launch, earlier than expected. Second, the training will emphasize Apple Intelligence as a key sales pitch. Generative AI has become a major smartphone feature since Google’s Pixel 8 series in 2024, and Apple aims to highlight this, even if the first AI features won’t be available at launch.

For many, it might be wiser to wait until AI fully integrates into Apple’s devices. The iPhone 15 Pro offers a good position, able to run the new AI software once available and upgrade later when the software matures. Some may prefer waiting for the iPhone 17 Pro, anticipating Apple will resolve initial AI issues and optimize hardware.

Holding off on an upgrade could also save money. Once the iPhone 16 Pro launches, the iPhone 15 Pro’s price will drop, making it a more attractive option. While Apple might not offer significant discounts, carriers and online stores will likely reduce prices to clear older stock.

The differences between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro are minor—mainly a slight battery increase and improved zoom on the telephoto lens. This year’s model focuses more on software than hardware, and those seeking significant physical upgrades might want to skip this generation.

The iPhone 16 Pro represents the future, but it might be wise to wait and see how that future unfolds before making a commitment.
